Empowerment Gift

If you do nothing else for yourself this season, I highly recommend that you give yourself – or your loved ones – a little gift.

Have you had the chance to read the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio or did you see the movie? You may remember that Auggie’s teacher, Mr. Browne, introduces the kids to precepts. Each and every month, Mr. Browne introduces a precept – or words to live by – and encourages the kids to write their own during the following summer.

If you haven’t yet heard of them, there are two books that accompany Wonder – Augie & Me: Three Wonder Stories and 365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne’s Precepts. For anyone who has read the book or loved the movie, Augie & Me is a great second book that tells you a little bit more about the experiences that were had by some of the characters in Wonder. But 365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne’s Precepts? That’s a book that we all really need to have.

As you can infer from the title, 365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne’s Precepts includes a different precept for each calendar day. There are quotes from people like Gandhi, Charles Dickens, Victor Hugo, Lewis Carroll, and Sophocles as well as proverbs and precepts from the “students of Beecher Prep.”

Each and every day brings you a new quote to enjoy and empower you. This is geared towards children grades 3-7, but adults will enjoy it just as much as the kids (speaking from experience here!). Here are examples of some of the precepts you’ll find:

“Don’t tell me not to fly, I’ve simply got to.” – Bob Merrill and Julie Styne, “Don’t Rain on My Parade

“Man can learn nothing unless he proceeds from the known to the unknown.” – Claude Bernard

“There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.” – Beverly Sills

“Goodness does not consist in greatness, but greatness in goodness.” – Athenaeus

These sayings, quotes and song lyrics are meant to make you think; to empower your actions, your words, and your thoughts. Do yourself a favor and get this book as a gift to yourself and/or anyone else that you think would benefit. It doesn’t have to be a holiday gift, just a token of positivity for yourself.

That being said, we can ALL benefit from words like these, so be sure to share the greatness of a book like this! It will bring a smile to your face each and every day.
