Valentine Heart Cookies
Show your Valentine a little extra love with these homemade Heart-Shaped Valentine’s Day Cookies! Whether you’re having a special date on February 14th or celebrating an anniversary or birthday party, these are the perfect way to let someone know you love them.
These Valentines Day heart cookies have a cute heart shape in a pretty pink with chocolate drizzle and sprinkles, so they are fun cookies to make and eat. There is no need for anything like royal icing or a complicated addition and truly, anyone can make them.
I know that a box of chocolates and flowers are the staple with some conversation hearts thrown into the mix, but sometimes the best Valentine’s Day gifts are the ones that come from the heart – and the kitchen. These delicious hearts will add something extra special to your day.
This festive treat will make as many or as few cookies as you want depending on the size of your heart cookie cutter. Make a bunch of smaller hearts or 12 larger Valentine hearts if you don’t need as many.
Always vegetarian, this easy recipe has a short prep time, a short bake time, and ends up with a gorgeous cookie in a fun shape. These are Valentine cookies that everyone will enjoy!
Valentine’s Day Cookie Recipe
How To Make:
Ingredients:
3/4 cup butter, salted, softened
2/3 cup granulated sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp almond extract
1 large egg
Pink gel food coloring
Chocolate melting candy
Pink and white sprinkles
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees and line an ungreased cookie sheet with a piece of parchment paper or wax paper. You may need two cookie sheets if you are baking them all at once.
In a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer, beat together your softened butter and sugar at medium or low speed. Next, quickly mix in your almond extract and egg.
Mix your flour and food coloring into the large bowl. Continue to mix (being sure to scrape the sides of the bowl) until you have a thick pink dough and none of the flour mixture is visible. Continue to add food color until you are pleased with the color, but I usually start with 6 drops.
Flour a flat, clean work surface and roll your dough out with a rolling pin. You will have to do this a few times with the extra dough pieces as you cut out your hearts.
Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out your heart shapes and place them onto your lined baking sheet. Reroll scraps of dough until you can’t cut out any more. Discard any remaining dough when you are done.
Bake your cutout cookies for 8 minutes. Once done, remove them from the oven and let your cookies cool completely on the sheet pan or a wire rack.
For the topping, place one cup of chocolate candy melts into a microwave-safe dish and microwave for 2-3 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until melted.
Pour the melted chocolate into a piping bag or Ziploc and cut a small tip off of the end. Drizzle your melted chocolate onto each of the heart cookies in a zigzag pattern.
Top each cookie with some festive sprinkles and let them set on a piece of parchment paper (with the undecorated flat side down) for 15 minutes until the chocolate hardens. Serve and enjoy!
Store any leftovers in an airtight container or on a plate tightly wrapped in plastic wrap at room temperature for up to 5 days.
I Can’t Find Valentine’s Day Sprinkles – What Should I Use?
These cookies will work with lots of different varieties of sprinkles. If you have leftover clear crystal sprinkles, white sprinkles, pink jimmies – any of them will work. If you try to stick with Valentine’s Day colors, they’ll turn out great.
Can I Use Chocolate Chips Instead Of Chocolate Candy Melts?
You can use dark chocolate or milk chocolate chips instead of candy melts, but chocolate chips will dry with a different texture than you may be looking for. Candy melts maintain a smoother texture than chocolate chips, but they will still taste delicious.
