Recipe Notes:

  • If you can’t find a large head of cabbage, you can use a different type of cabbage. Get a small head of cabbage (and maybe use two), some purple cabbage, or even napa cabbage.
  • For a little bit of extra heat in your cabbage sausage skillet, sprinkle some red pepper flakes into the mix when you are seasoning your dish.
  • You may want to serve this delicious recipe with a slotted spoon, as you will still have liquid at the bottom of the pan when everything is cooked.

Directions:

Step 1: Pull out a large cutting board and knife. Chop up your onion into small pieces and set it aside.

Step 2: Pull the outer leaves off of your green cabbage if they are a bit wilted. Wash and then chop up the entire head of cabbage.

You’ll want these to be coarsely chopped with pieces that aren’t too small, but also not sliced cabbage wheels.

Can I Use A Different Kind Of Sausage?

Yes! This cabbage skillet calls for andouille sausage, Cajun sausage, or spicy sausage, but if you want to opt out of the spicy, choose another kind of sausage.

You could use smoked sausage, kielbasa sausage, polish sausage, Italian sausage, or even a turkey sausage or chicken sausage in this dish.

Just remember that pork sausage will taste different from beef sausage and that will taste different than turkey sausage, but all andouille sausage should have a spicy and smoky flavor.

If there is an easy sausage for you to pick up at your grocery store, it may turn out a little different, but it will still be delicious.

  1. Calories per serve are closer to 300 calories!!!! All that oil and butter! removes those 2 ingredients and it’s STILL at about 200 calories per serve and not the 171 calories you claim it to be!
