Recipe Notes:

  • You can leave the shrimp tails on or off. It is completely your choice.
  • Both frozen and refrigerated shrimp will work for this recipe.
  • Add extra salt if needed, but you will have both a dash of salt as well as salt from the soy sauce. Be careful not to add more salt until you have taste-tested your spicy honey sauce.
  • Some people like extra sauce with their shrimp, so if you want to pour it over your rice, be sure to double every ingredient other than the shrimp.

How To Store Leftover Hot Honey Shrimp

Store any leftover shrimp in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days.

Can I Make My Hot Honey Shrimp Ahead Of Time And Reheat It Later?

Yes! I always recommend eating your spicy shrimp fresh, but if you are working on meal prep and want to eat them the next day, you can.

Take your cooked shrimp out of the refrigerator and add them to a pan with a little bit of olive oil. Heat over medium heat until the shrimp are warm. Be careful not to overcook the shrimp by heating them for too long.

Can I Use Different Types Of Shrimp?

Yes! While you want to use a pound of shrimp for the full recipe, the size of your shrimp may vary.

You can use either frozen or refrigerated shrimp. The recipe calls for raw shrimp, but if you are using precooked jumbo shrimp from a shrimp cocktail platter, they will not need to cook in the pan for very long. Just make sure that they are warmed through before moving to the next step.

If you are using frozen shrimp, thaw them by running cold water over them for a few minutes until they are soft. Dry them with a few paper towels and continue with the recipe. This will help you get a golden brown on the sear.

If you choose to use smaller shrimp, they will cook through a little bit quicker, so keep your eyes on their color. If the shrimp start to become opaque quickly, flip them and cook them for an equal amount of time on the other side. Larger shrimp may take a little longer.

Can I Adjust The Level Of Spiciness In This Recipe?

Yes! The spicy hot honey sauce comes from the chili flakes or chipotle seasoning. You can choose to use less of them for just a little heat or you can replace them with something else.

Red pepper flakes are hotter than chili flakes, so use those or cayenne pepper to increase the heat.

You could also substitute a hot sauce or sriracha sauce if you’re more familiar with them to control the heat level to your comfort.

The spicy sauce should live at your comfort level, so don’t try to power through. Add a little bit of heat and taste test until you’re happy with it.

How Can I Make This Recipe Gluten-Free?

You can easily make this hot honey shrimp gluten-free by replacing your soy sauce with tamari sauce. All of the other ingredients are naturally gluten-free.

What Are Some Variations Or Twists On This Recipe?

So while this is a pretty standard recipe, there are a variety of ways that you can alter this dish a little bit.

You could use sesame oil instead of olive oil for a slightly nuttier flavor or add a little maple syrup to the honey component for a bit of a caramel flavor.

If you want to add something, small broccoli florets or snow peas would be great additions after you’ve cooked the shrimp through. And if you prefer lime juice, substitute your lemon wedges with lime wedges.
