Black Eyed Pea Dip

There are a million taco dip recipes out there that are delicious, but they can get repetitive. Make a great change and try out my Black Eyed Pea Taco Dip instead!

This cheesy black-eyed pea dip is extremely easy to make, but swaps an unexpected ingredient for refried beans or black beans.

Black eyed peas are lower in both calories and fat (they actually have healthy fat) than refried beans, so even though the beans will be similar, you’ll have a slightly different flavor with a very familiar texture.

Black eyed peas are supposed to provide good fortune when you eat them on new year’s eve or new years day, but they’re also fantastic any time of year. This is one of the easy recipes you could make for the super bowl or instead of Texas caviar (aka Cowboy Caviar).

While this is a huge crowd-pleaser just as it is, it can easily be turned into a vegetarian dip by leaving off the bacon. It’s also the perfect appetizer for your gluten-free guests, so keep it in your back pocket as a new signature dish!

Recipe Notes:

  • This is an appetizer that is best when it is made fresh, so you will want to put this together the same day you plan to serve.
  • This black-eyed pea dip recipe will be fine left out at room temperature for several hours during any gathering.

You may also want to add a bit of salt and pepper depending on whether the peas in the can are seasoned. Mash with a potato masher until your peas are smooth.

What Should I Serve This Black Eyed Pea Dip Recipe Alongside?

There are tons of options to serve with this southern dip. Tortilla chips or scoops, corn chips, or pita chips work well if you want to serve dip and chips.

You can also serve this with carrots, celery, red pepper slices, other bell peppers, snap peas, or other fresh veggies.

Can I Add Some Spice To This Delicious Dip?

The great thing about this recipe is that you can add and subtract as desired. If you’re looking to give this easy black eyed pea dip some extra kick, there are several options that I’d suggest.

Red onion pieces for a sharp and sweet addition, green chiles for a little kick, or jalapeño peppers for some real spice. You could also serve the dip with hot sauce or red chili flakes on the side, as that would compliment it nicely.
