Snowman Pretzel Rods

If you’re looking for cute winter desserts, these Snowman Pretzels with Earmuffs are right up there with the best of them! Perfect to make on a snow day or a craft day, this easy recipe is a salty and sweet treat made up of different candies and icings that you can find at most grocery stores.

While these look a little bit complicated to make, it doesn’t take any great skill. In a couple of easy steps, you can make these sweet and salty snowman treats for a bake sale, a winter party, classroom treats, or for any Hanukkah, Christmas, or other holiday celebration you have. They’re extremely universal.

Plus, if you have any Frozen fans in the house (or in the neighborhood), these can be your own personal Olaf desserts. Winter themed treats that are a fun way to celebrate your children’s favorite movie (I love the Frozen films!).

Always vegetarian, egg-free, and nut-free (almond bark does not contain almonds or nuts), these snowman pretzels are a fun food for a huge audience of people. If you choose to use gluten-free pretzel rods, you can also make this into a gluten-free dessert.

These adorable snowmen are also perfect to make as a last minute gift idea. Purchase some cellophane bags or mason jars and place a few of the delicious treats in each one. Give them out during the holiday season or any time of year!

How Many Snowman Pretzels Does This Recipe Make?

You can make as many or as few of these festive snowman pretzel rods as you’d like if you purchase enough ingredients. A 12 oz package of pretzel rods will have about 30 pretzels, which gives you about 60 snowman opportunities.

As long as you have enough candy eyes, bark, and skittles, you can probably make everything else stretch, so you aren’t limited to my 30 snowmen.

Recipe Notes:

  • If you’d prefer not to use the microwave, take out a double boiler and melt your white chocolate almond bark in that way.
  • When dipping each of the pretzels, do not cover the entire pretzel with almond bark. Leave the ends uncovered.
  • If you are unable to get orange frosting in a can, place some frosting in a piping bag or sandwich bag, cut off a tip, and make the orange noses that way.
  • Serve these festive treats in a tall glass or arrange each of the pretzel snowmen on a serving platter.

How To Make Snowman Pretzel Rods:

Snowman Pretzel Rods Ingredients:

1 package pretzel rods 12 oz
1 package white almond bark
60 green skittles (or you can use different colors for each snowman)
60 tiny candy eyes
1 package red fondant
Wilton black gel icing
Orange icing in a can or pouch

Supplies Needed:

Large cookie tray
Parchment paper or wax paper
Medium microwave-safe bowl
Rolling pin
Butter knife

Ingredients for Snowman Pretzels including orange cake icing, red fondant, black gel, pretzel rods, almond bark, skittles, and candy eyes on a wooden table

Directions:

Step 1: Place a piece of parchment paper or wax paper on a large baking sheet.

Step 2: In a microwave-safe bowl, place your almond bark in the microwave. Heat it on 50% power in 30-second increments, making sure to stir in between each, until your almond bark is melted.

Shake off any excess almond bark and then place the dipped pretzels onto your parchment paper in a single layer.

Step 5: Once you have the desired amount of pretzels, carefully transfer your cookie sheet to the freezer for 5 minutes to let the melted chocolate harden (or you can leave them out on the counter for about 30 minutes).

Red fondant rolled out on waxed paper next to almond bark dipped pretzelsStep 6: While you are waiting for the bark to harden, roll out your red fondant with a rolling pin on a piece of parchment paper. You’ll want it so that it is thin, but not too thin such that it will fall apart.

Serve and enjoy your own little snowmen!

Should My Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods Be Refrigerated?

Yes! To preserve your coated pretzels most effectively, you will want to keep them refrigerated.

It is totally fine for them to be out at room temperature for hours or a day if you plan to serve them or are having a party, but in order to keep them in their best shape, you’ll want to store this easy treat in an airtight container or a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator.

How Long Do Dipped Pretzel Rods Last?

This special treat should last for 2 – 3 weeks if you keep them refrigerated. All of the items used to make them are shelf-stable before you start working with them, so they will last for a few weeks after you’ve put them together.

I Don’t Have Fondant – Can I Use Something Else For These Holiday Treats?

Yes! The easiest swap for fondant for these snowman pretzel treats is Fruit Roll-Ups.

Make sure to choose a bright color (or strawberry if you’d like to stick with red) and slice each Fruit Rollup into rectangular strips the same as you would the fondant. Wrap them around your white chocolate pretzels and finish each snowman face.

Can These Almond Bark Pretzels Be Coated With Another Melted White Chocolate?

Almond bark is the easiest and best choice for coating these salty pretzels, but if you don’t have access to it at your grocery store, the best substitute is white candy melts.

The amount of melted candy needed may provide some additional cost, but they will provide the candy coating you are looking for with the bark.

Using white chocolate chips for these chocolate-covered pretzel rods will leave you with a slightly grittier texture and less smooth finish when the chocolate sets, but you can use them if you’re in a pinch.
