These Chocolate Crinkle Cookies are a classic holiday treat! A cookie with a fudgy center and a powdered sugar coating, these will be a huge hit!
Classic Chocolate Crinkle Cookies
If you’re looking for a cookie with a brownie-like texture that will fit perfectly on your holiday cookie tray, you have to try these Chocolate Crinkle Cookies! One of the classic cookie recipes that you may have seen at holiday parties, these are also fantastic to make any time of year.
These fudgy chocolate crinkle cookies – also called chocolate crackle cookies – are a little different than your typical cookies in that you do have to refrigerate the batter overnight.
That said, the result is the fun chocolate crinkles that you’ll see in your baked cookies the next day. That is the best part! It makes these classic Christmas cookies unique from anything else you bake.
This is a vegetarian recipe that includes unsweetened chocolate as opposed to cake mix. You may see other recipes that use a cake mix, but this one is completely from-scratch. For these specific cookies, I think that’s the way to go.
The perfect cookie for the holiday season, these will get eaten quickly. You’ll want to be sure to make a double batch so that you have a few for yourself!
Recipe Notes:
- You can use an electric mixer for this chocolate crinkle cookies recipe, but you should only need a wooden spoon.
- It is important that you allow this cookie batter to refrigerate overnight or you won’t have the crackly surface and soft center that you’re looking for.
How To Make Chocolate Crinkle Cookies:
Chocolate Crinkle Cookie Recipe Ingredients:
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups granulated sugar
4 large eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 1/4 tablespoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup powdered sugar
Supplies Needed:
Large mixing bowl
Kitchen spoon
Plastic wrap or cling wrap
Cookie sheet
Parchment paper
Small bowl
Tablespoon or small cookie scoop
Directions:
Step 1: In a large bowl, stir together your cocoa powder, white sugar, and vegetable oil.
Step 2: Mix in your eggs and vanilla extract.
Step 3: Once that is incorporated, mix in your flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir until none of the flour mixture is visible and you have a fully chocolate batter.
Step 4: Cover your chocolate mixture with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate overnight. This will allow your batter to set.
Step 5: The next day, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 6: Pour your powdered sugar into a small bowl and put it to the side.
Step 7: Using a tablespoon, scoop out a large dough ball and roll it in your hands until it is a smooth sphere. You’re looking for approximately 1-inch balls.
Step 8: Dip your cookie dough balls into the confectioners’ sugar and coat each one completely. Once covered, put each of the balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet.
Step 9: Bake your delicious chocolate cookies on the middle oven rack for 14 minutes.
Step 10: Once fully baked, allow them to cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy!
How To Store Chocolate Crinkle Cookies
Store any leftovers in an airtight container on the counter for up to 5 days.
How To Freeze Chocolate Crinkle Cookies
If you have leftover cookies that you won’t eat right away or want to have them available for a few months, you can absolutely freeze these fudgy cookies.
To freeze them, first, allow them to cool to room temperature on the baking sheets. Move the baking sheets to the freezer to flash freeze them for 2 hours.
Once frozen, and starting with a single layer, add your cookies flat between sheets of parchment paper in a freezer bag or freezer container. Keep these in the freezer for up to 3 months for best results.
Can I Make These Chocolate Chip Cookies?
Yes! You can easily add chocolate chips to this recipe. The first time you make these, I highly recommend following the easy recipe above. The chocolate chips will add an extra element, so it will be easier if you’ve made these before. The second time you make them, add a 3/4 cup of chocolate chips to the batter before you refrigerate the dough. Continue with the recipe the next day and check the cookies at 14 minutes, as the baking time may be slightly longer.
