Easy Dino Cookies
These Dinosaur Egg Cookies are a super fun treat for birthday parties and Jurassic Park fans! An easy homemade sugar cookie recipe with simple decorations, everyone will love them.
My son used to love dinosaurs when he was little, and my nephew loves them now. I’ve seen a lot of dinosaur cookie cutters around, but not a lot of dino eggs. I thought it was time to change that.
While you will want to take the time to make the dough and cut each egg shape yourself, decorating these dinosaur cookies is an easy and fun kid-friendly activity.
You can get all of the simple ingredients at your local grocery store and there is nothing complicated like royal icing, so the kids can frost each sweet treat themselves and then choose their own M&M’s.
Whether this is for a dinosaur party or just something to do on the weekend, this is sure to become a favorite recipe that the kid will want to share with their friends. They’re super cute and extremely easy!
How To Make Decorated Dinosaur Cookies
Dinosaur Egg Cookies Ingredients:
3/4 cup salted butter, softened
3/4 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons almond extract
1 large egg
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tub white frosting
1 bag/box jumbo M&M’s
1 bag/box regular M&M’s
1 bag/box mini M&M’s
Supplies Needed:
Large cookie sheet
Parchment paper or nonstick spray
Large bowl
Electric mixer
Kitchen spoon or wooden spoon
Rubber spatula
Rolling pin
Cooling rack
Egg cookie cutter
Directions:
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 325 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If you don’t have any, grease the baking sheet well with nonstick cooking spray.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, beat your butter and sugar together with a hand mixer or stand mixer.
Step 3: Once they are combined, quickly add your almond extract and egg into the large bowl.
Step 4: After everything is incorporated, mix your plain flour into the egg mixture. The results should be crumbly dough.
Step 5: Knead the dough in your hands until it starts sticking together.
Step 6: On a large, flat surface, lay down a piece of parchment paper or flour the table. Using a floured rolling pin, roll out your dough.
Step 7: Use an egg-shaped cookie cutter to cut out your cookie dinosaur eggs and transfer them to your prepared baking tray.
Continue to knead the sugar cookie dough, roll it back out, and cut cookie eggs until you have used up the whole thing.
Step 8: Bake your cutout cookies for 10 minutes until the edges of the cookies are golden brown.
Step 9: Allow your cookies to cool slightly and transfer them to a wire cooling rack. You may need more than one wire rack depending on how large your cookies are. Allow them to cool to room temperature.
Step 10: Once your cookies have cooled completely, frost them with your white icing.
Step 11: Press on different colors and sizes of your M&M’s to create your dino egg cookies and serve.
How To Store Leftover Dinosaur Egg Cookies
Store any leftovers in an airtight container on the counter for up to 7 days. They will be the freshest during the first 3 days.
Can I Make These Dinosaur Sugar Cookies Nut-Free?
This simple recipe does include almond extract, so anyone with a tree nut allergy will want to avoid them. If you are looking for a substitute, you can use pure vanilla extract instead.
Almond extract has a stronger flavor than vanilla, so you will want to use a little more than what you see in the ingredients checklist.
Can I Use Anything Other Than M&M’s For These Dinosaur Cookies?
Yes! I like to keep the flavor consistent by using M&M’s, but you can use other candy if you’d like. You’re looking for colorful and round candies, so something like Skittles or chocolate chips could work.
