These easy Pepperoni Rolls are your favorite grilled cheese, but better! With only four ingredients, this is a great recipe that even picky eaters will enjoy!
Homemade Pepperoni Rolls
Let’s be honest – when it comes to lunch and dinner recipes, what we have in our playbook starts to get stale. We buy the same ingredients because that is what we and our families enjoy, but using them creatively becomes a challenge. This is where these easy Pepperoni Rolls came from!
These Pepperoni Rollups require the same ingredients that you would make for grilled cheese. They aren’t unusual or hard to find (you can find them in any grocery store), they’re just presented in a different way.
Your family will think that you’re amazing while you know that you just added a fun twist on a classic family favorite.
If you are a vegetarian or have a vegetarian in your family, you can easily remove the pepperoni from these rollups and just make straight-up grilled cheese rolls.
Perfect as a Friday night dinner, an after-school snack, or for game day, this is a fun recipe that the whole family will love.
Are These Like West Virginia Pepperoni Rolls?
These homemade pepperoni pizza rolls are different from those you’d find with West Virginians or in western Pennsylvania.
That food classic usually has pepperoni sticks baked within dough balls, which was inspired by a coal miner’s lunch in the first half of the 20th century.
Coal miners could bring their delicious pizza rolls to work with them, knowing that they would last in the coal mines until they could eat them. These bread pizza rolls aren’t those, but they definitely share the inspiration!
Recipe Notes:
- You can coat the rolls with butter by using a spoon, dipping them into the bowl, or using a pastry brush.
- Use any variety of pepperoni that you like – spicy pepperoni, turkey pepperoni, beef pepperoni, or regular pepperoni.
- If you are planning to send these as a school lunch or school snack, wrap them in plastic wrap or place them in an airtight container. They will be fine at room temperature until lunchtime.
How To Make Pepperoni Rolls Recipe
Pepperoni Rolls Ingredients:
4 pieces white bread
4 slices Kraft Singles American Cheese
12 pepperoni slices
1/2 stick butter (total for all sandwiches up to four)
Supplies Needed:
Large skillet
Cutting board
Sharp knife
Rolling pin
Microwave-safe plate
Medium microwave-safe bowl
Paper towels
Directions:
Step 1: Take four pieces of white bread and carefully cut the crusts off with a sharp knife.
Step 2: Using a rolling pin on top of a cutting board, roll your bread out flat.
Step 3: Warm your bread in the microwave for 15 seconds and then place a slice of cheese on each piece.
Step 4: Place three slices of pepperoni on top of each slice of cheese.
Step 5: Place your butter in a microwave safe bowl, cover it with a piece of paper towel, and melt the butter in 15-second increments, stirring the butter between intervals.
Step 6: Carefully roll up each piece of bread and coat the outside with melted butter.
Step 7: Place each pepperoni rollup in a lightly greased frying pan. Place seam side down to start.
Step 8: Rotate each roll to make sure that they cook evenly on each side. They are done when you have a nice golden brown all the way around.
Serve with a small bowl of marinara sauce, your favorite pizza sauce, or ranch dressing, and enjoy!
How To Store Leftover Pepperoni Pizza Rolls
Store any leftover pepperoni rolls in an airtight container or a freezer bag in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
To reheat them, either use the microwave or – for best results – warm them in a skillet to maintain the crispiness of the bread.
Can I Use Some Seasoning Or A Different Cheese?
Yes! This is a super basic (and delicious!) recipe, but you can absolutely make changes. If you don’t care for American cheese, try some cheddar, parmesan cheese, or even sliced up mozzarella cheese sticks if that is your child’s favorite.
You shouldn’t need any additional seasoning, but if you’d like to add some garlic powder, Italian seasoning, or a little sprinkle of garlic salt, they could enhance the flavors you’re looking for next time you make it.
Can You Use Olive Oil Instead Of Butter For Grilled Cheese?
Yes! Whether you’re making grilled cheese or a rollup like these Pepperoni Rolls, you can substitute olive oil for butter.
You will get a golden brown on the outside of your bread, but understand that while the pizza flavor will be the same, the richness that you would get from the butter will be different.
Can I Make These Pizza Roll-Ups In The Oven?
Because this easy recipe makes rollups that are more like grilled cheese than pizza, I don’t recommend baking these on a baking sheet in the oven or toaster oven.
By making this pepperoni roll recipe on a cookie sheet, you would have to keep turning them every few minutes to ensure that each roll was getting crispy all the way around. Making them on the stove is the better choice.
