Cheesy Pretzel Dogs
You don’t have to reserve pretzel dogs to the ballpark. These delicious Homemade Pretzel Dogs with Cheese are a choice dish that anyone can make right in their own kitchen!
I grew up eating a traditional hot dog in a traditional hot dog bun at the ballpark. Whether we were at a Cubs game or watching my brother play ball as a kid, the hot dog was always my favorite part of the experience. I mean, I love my brother, but watching a game is just better with a dog!
Then Annie Anne’s came into the picture and their pretzel dogs were awesome. So it was time to find a way to make them at home.
An easy pretzel dog recipe with simple ingredients that you can get at your local grocery store, this will have you making soft pretzels with hot dogs and cheese wrapped inside.
This family-friendly recipe uses 10 hot dogs or sausages (your choice), but you’ll be cutting them in half to serve more people. Great for game day, as a birthday party treat, or as an after-school snack, these are a great finger food. Serve them on their own, with your favorite mustard or a cheese sauce on the side.
Pretzel Dog Recipe
How To Make:
Ingredients:
1 packet active dry or instant yeast
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted and slightly cool
4+ cups all-purpose flour (extra for work surface)
10 sausage links or hot dogs
2 cheddar cheese bricks
11 1/2 cups hot water, separated
1/2 cup baking soda
1 large egg
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and line two large cookie sheets with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, stir your yeast packet into 1 1/2 cups of hot water, mixing well. Add salt, sugar, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Slowly add in 4 cups of flour, mixing well until you get a thick dough ball.
Flour your countertop or other flat surface and knead the dough until it pops back out after poking it with your finger.
Roll out the dough in small batches with a floured rolling pin so that you end up with up to 20 smaller pieces of dough.
On a cutting board with a sharp knife, slice your hot dogs in half and slice your cheddar cheese into 20 thin slices. Do your best to create equal pieces for each.
Place one sausage and one slice of cheese next to each other on the dough.
Wrap the soft pretzel dough around the sausage and cheese until the dough meets on the other side. Press the piece of dough together at the edges so that it holds. It is okay to leave the ends of the dough by the end of the hot dog open.
In a large pot, mix your 1/2 cup of baking soda with 10 cups of water and bring it to a boil. Drop each wrapped pretzel dog into this baking soda bath until it floats in the boiling water.
Remove the boiled pretzel dogs with a slotted spoon, shake them off, dab them with a paper towel, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Beat one egg to create an egg wash and brush it over each pretzel dog with a pastry brush.
Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until they are a deep golden brown. You may see some cheese melt out – that is normal.
Once ready, allow them to cool for about 5 minutes and serve. Enjoy!
Store any leftovers in an airtight container or on a plate wrapped tightly with plastic wrap for up to 3 days.
Can I Add Anything To The Top Of These Homemade Pretzels?
Yes! After boiling the mini pretzel dogs you can add some coarse salt, pretzel salt, or sesame seeds to the top of the dough if you would like. Then bake and serve.
