Cream Of Mushroom Chicken Recipe

If you’re looking for a delicious dinner that you can make any night of the week, you have to try my Easy Cream of Mushroom Chicken Skillet! A perfect example of simple and flavorful, this will be a game changer for busy families. 

I love cast iron skillet meals because they are always so full of flavor. Everything is crispy and uncomplicated. In our house, especially when it comes to dinner, simplicity is key. Dinner is even better when they are one-pot meals because I can throw everything into one place and call it a day rather than mess around the kitchen.

This creamy chicken recipe has only five ingredients and your cooking time is less than half an hour. An easy meal that you can make to get the whole family fed and satisfied while making sure not to sacrifice flavor. 

Recipe Notes:

  • You can use chicken tenderloins instead of breasts, but they will reach a golden brown quicker because they are smaller. Cook them for 3-4 minutes on each side and then be sure to check that they are cooked through after simmering. 
  • Serve this with a side of veggies or a salad to make a complete meal.

How To Make Cream Of Mushroom Chicken

Cream of Mushroom Chicken Ingredients:

4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
4 Tablespoons butter 
1 to 2 cups flour
1 can cream of mushroom soup 22.6 oz
Salt and black pepper (to taste)
1/4 cup green onions (optional)

Supplies Needed:

Cast iron skillet
Spatula
Cutting board
Sharp knife
Paper towels
Large plate

Directions:

Step 1: Heat your butter in a 12″ cast iron skillet over medium heat. Trim your raw chicken on a cutting board and season each chicken breast with salt and pepper liberally. If your whole chicken breasts are on the larger side, cut them in half.

Step 2: Dip your seasoned chicken breasts in flour and coat all sides.

Place a few paper towels on a large plate and set them aside. After your chicken cooks for 5 minutes on each side, remove it from the skillet and place it on the paper towels.

Cream of mushroom soup cooking in a large black cast iron skilletStep 4: Pour your can of cream of mushroom soup into the large skillet (so that it covers the bottom) and add the chicken back in. Allow the creamy sauce and juicy chicken to simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Step 5: Add some sliced green onions to the top of the chicken and enjoy!

How To Store Leftover Cream Of Mushroom Chicken

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. 

What Can I Pair This Creamy Mushroom Chicken Recipe With? 

This delicious recipe is great all by itself, but it’s easy to pair with other things. I often serve it on top of some egg noodles, but it would be great over brown or white rice as well.

You can easily serve it with mashed potatoes (the sauce becomes mushroom gravy!) and green beans on the side and I like to top mine with some parmesan cheese. One reader mentioned topping hers with sour cream, so I’m going to try that next time!

Can I Add Fresh Mushrooms To The Creamy Mushroom Sauce?

Yes! If you want to add some sliced mushrooms to this savory dish, cook them up in the skillet before you cook your chicken.

Using a little butter, olive oil, or chicken broth, sauté your mushrooms for a few minutes and then set them aside. Once you are at the point where you are adding your cooked chicken tenders to the canned soup in the skillet, stir in your cooked mushrooms as well. 

Can I Substitute Cream Of Chicken For Cream Of Mushroom Soup?

For the best results, I wouldn’t make this substitute. If you are using cream of chicken soup in this mushroom soup chicken, you’re really turning it into chicken soup chicken. I’m sure it would be delicious, but it would quickly become a whole other chicken dinner with an entirely different flavor.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 to 2 cups flour
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup 22.6 oz
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 1/4 cup green onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat your butter in a 12" cast iron skillet over medium heat.
  2. Salt and pepper your chicken liberally.
  3. Dip and cover your chicken in flour and cook it in the skillet for 5 minutes on each side.
  4. Place a few paper towels on a large plate and set them aside.
  5. After the chicken has cooked for 5 minutes on each side, remove it from the skillet and place it on the paper toweled plate.
  6. Pour the cream of mushroom soup into the skillet and add the chicken back in.
  7. Allow your soup and chicken to simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Make sure your chicken is cooked thoroughly before removing and serve.
  9. Add green onions to the top of your chicken and enjoy!
