Bacon Wrapped Asparagus Recipe
When you are camping or grilling out, you may have tried cooking bacon or asparagus on the grill for breakfast or lunch. But what about Bacon Wrapped Asparagus on the grill? You’ve got to give it a go!
This easy side dish is a fun one to serve at a barbecue because of the added smoky flavor. Plus, it looks awesome and is perfect for asparagus fans!
Naturally low-carb, keto diet friendly, paleo, Atkins friendly, gluten-free, dairy-free and so much more, this amazing bacon dish is perfect for people with special diets. Your guests will love this unique twist on some tasty food staples.
This is one of those perfect side dishes to go with your main dish while working the grill, and the whole family will love it. If you have a child or guest who is looking for the best way to try new veggies and this is the first asparagus they’ve tasted, this may be the best way to do it.
The smokiness of the bacon and slight char from the grill is one of the great things about it and will remind them of other dishes they’ve had. Then the next time it won’t be so scary.
Camping recipes can often be less than healthy, but beyond the incredible flavors of the asparagus in this dish, it is also good for you. Asparagus is a good source of fiber, folic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin A while also being a low carb veggie.

Recipe Notes:
- You can rub the stalks of asparagus with olive oil and season with black pepper and salt if you’d like, but it isn’t necessary.
- If you have thicker asparagus you may not have as many spears as you would with thin asparagus (as I have in the pictures), but the cooking time on your fresh vegetables should still be the same.
- Because of the way you are cooking, this bacon-wrapped asparagus will yield soft-cooked bacon instead of super crispy bacon.
How To Make Bacon Wrapped Asparagus On The Grill
Bacon Wrapped Asparagus Ingredients:
1 – 1 1/2 lbs fresh asparagus spears
3 pieces thick center cut bacon
Supplies Needed:
Aluminum foil
Toothpicks
Charcoal or gas grill
Directions:
Step 1: Rinse your asparagus stalks with cold water and trim off the woody ends so that they are uniform. On a flat surface or baking sheet, lay down a piece of aluminum foil to work from and lay out your bacon slices.
Step 2: Take about a third of your asparagus and add it to the center of one of your slices of bacon. It is okay if they are in a single layer, as you will be bunching them in a second.
Wrap the bacon slice around the green vegetables so that the ends meet in front. (You want to leave a bit of wiggle room so your bacon can fit around and overlap the sides.)
Once you have wrapped the slice of bacon around the asparagus, add a toothpick into the middle of the bacon ends to hold the bundle of asparagus together. If you don’t have toothpicks, you can break wooden skewers in half.
Step 3: When the bundles are done being put together, close up the ends of your aluminum foil so that it is tray-like. Place the aluminum foil on your campfire grill, right onto the grill grates, and let them cook for about 8 – 10 minutes.
If you are using a charcoal grill, your goal is to keep the fire at medium heat or medium-high heat.
Step 4: Once that time has passed, take them off the grill. Carefully remove the asparagus bundles from the aluminum foil and place them directly back on the grill so that you can get a nice crisp to the bacon.
Watch carefully during this time and rotate as needed. The cook time can take several minutes, as you are wanting to make certain that each bacon piece is thoroughly cooked, but you don’t want overcooked asparagus.
Pull them from the campfire once the smoky bacon is a little crispy and cooked all the way.
Serve and enjoy immediately! If you need a few minutes of prep for other parts of your meal, you can lay the bacon asparagus bundles on a wire rack or in a room temperature pan on the side for a short time.
How to Store Leftover Bacon Wrapped Asparagus
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in a refrigerator or wrapped tightly in plastic wrap in an insulated cooler bag.
What Type Of Bacon Should I Use For This Easy Recipe?
The trick of this perfect side dish is that you want to use thick-cut bacon strips. I used center cut bacon because it is wider, but you can adjust based on what you have or what you can find at your local grocery store. You’re looking to hold the bundles of asparagus together with each piece of bacon, so the bacon “strength” is key.
If your grocery stores only have regular bacon or you prefer turkey bacon, try layering one strip of bacon ends on top of another. If you can insert a toothpick on either side to keep them together, that should work.
Are There Any Seasonings Or Toppings I Can Use On This Asparagus Dish?
Yes! This easy bacon wrapped asparagus is tasty just as it is, and it is the perfect way to use minimal ingredients while camping.
If you are at home or want to add a few things, you could add some lemon juice or lemon zest before wrapping the bacon, sprinkle some garlic powder, sea salt, fresh garlic or red pepper flakes, or even add parmesan cheese or mozzarella cheese to turn this into a cheesy asparagus recipe. Be careful as the cheese might run onto your grill though!
