Recipe Notes:
- This delicious trifle is best eaten the same day.
- Last year and the year before it was more difficult to find Halloween candy and Peeps. Use whatever Halloween treats you are drawn to if you can’t find these specific shapes this Halloween season.
- Serve each helping with some Cool Whip or whipped cream if desired.
How To Make Halloween Trifle Recipe
Halloween Trifle Ingredients:
2 boxes chocolate instant pudding 3.4 oz
4 cups milk
Prepared boxed chocolate fudge cake (Pillsbury/Duncan Hines with oil, eggs, water as instructed by the directions on the box)
1 package Halloween ghost Peeps
1 package Halloween pumpkin Peeps
1 cup candy corn
Supplies Needed:
9×13-inch baking dish
Medium or large bowl
Large trifle bowl
Directions:
Step 1: Prepare your chocolate cake mix according to the package directions. You can use Pillsbury, Duncan Hines, or any other brand that you may find on sale or have handy.
Step 2: Once you’ve prepared it, let the cake cool completely. Slice your cake into small cubes.
Step 3: In a medium sized bowl, pour both boxes of instant pudding. Pour in the required milk (this should be 4 cups of cold milk, but verify this on your specific box) and mix well. Refrigerate the pudding mixture for five minutes to set.
Step 4: Line the bottom outer edge of your clear glass trifle dish with your ghost Peeps, leaving a small space in between each of the little guys. You’ll want them to be standing up and facing out of the dish.
Step 5: Fill the bottom of the trifle dish, inside your marshmallow ghosts layer with your chocolate cake cubes, filling the space in between all your ghosts as well as possible. Don’t be afraid to let the cake fall into smaller pieces.
Step 6: Place a layer of about half of your chocolate pudding on top of the cake layer.
Step 7: Line the sides of your trifle dish (on top of the pudding) with your Halloween pumpkin Peeps. You’ll want them to be standing up and facing out of the dish.
Step 8: Fill the center with another layer of chocolate cake and top it off with the rest of your chocolate pudding.
Step 9: Use the rest of your pumpkin Peeps to make a circle on the top center of the trifle. Fill the center with candy corn and sprinkle the candy corn around the pumpkins on top of the trifle. Enjoy!
How To Store Your Halloween Trifle
Store any leftovers in the trifle dish covered tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap for up to 3 days.
What Else Can I Add To This Fun Dessert Trifle?
The best part about this easy Halloween dessert (other than how amazing it tastes) is that you can move around the ingredients as needed. You can add things or change them based on what you find at the grocery store.
A few easy additions are chocolate chips, chocolate syrup, candy eyes, Halloween sprinkles, and gummy worms. You can also wrap a little bit of spider web around the bottom of the trifle dish to keep things spooky.

This Halloween Trifle dessert is very easy to make and makes for a fantastic Halloween food. Let it be one of the Halloween recipes that will be at the centerpiece of your next party! The 35 minutes of cook time and 20 minutes of additional time account for the time it takes to bake your cake, allow it to cool, and allow your pudding to set. I just made this and I think that there should only be 4 cups of milk instead of 6. The pudding is not as thick. It gives way too much pudding when you use 6 and it turned into a big mess on top..spilling out onto the sides of the trifle.
I’m sorry that happened Shaun! It does tend to depend on the specifics of the brand of pudding you purchase. Unfortunately each yields may yield a slightly different thickness.
This is super cute! Just an FYI that neither Peeps nor candy corn are vegetarian due to gelatin.
Thank you so much for pointing that out – I completely forgot! I’ve updated the post.
Can this be made ahead of time and put into refrigerator or will peeps mush up?
I haven’t made it ahead of time, but I would think earlier in the day wouldn’t be a problem. Doing it the day before or a few days ahead of time, I’m not sure about. 🙂
