These Milky Way Brownies are the caramel chocolate treat you never knew you needed! A delicious twist on your favorite candy bar!
Milky Way Cake Mix Brownies
If you love Milky Way candy bars, you’re going to go crazy for these Milky Way Brownies! Delicious brownies with a special treat inside and a gooey caramel topping, these will be a huge hit.
Many brownie recipes that you are going to find use a brownie mix or cocoa powder. This is a little bit different in that the brownie base actually comes from a cake mix. For that reason, you could call this a Milky Way Cake recipe as well, but I think of these as brownies because of their fudginess.
With simple ingredients that you can find at any grocery store, this simple recipe takes very little prep time. Additionally, you can make the caramel sauce while you are baking your brownies, so the whole thing comes together very easily.
The perfect way to treat a chocolate lover and the easiest way to use up leftover Halloween candy, these will easily become a family favorite!
Recipe Notes:
- You are better off making a homemade caramel sauce (as in the recipe below) than melting caramel candies for the topping. You want the layer of caramel to melt into each chocolatey brownie instead of sitting on top.
- These fudgy brownies go great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
How To Make Milky Way Brownies Recipe
Milky Way Brownies Ingredients:
6 Milky Way Fun Size Bars or 3 regular Milky Way candy bars, chopped
1 box chocolate cake mix (I used Devil’s Food Cake)
3/4 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Caramel Topping Ingredients:
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup half and half
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Supplies Needed:
Cutting board
Sharp knife
9×13-inch pan
Nonstick spray, parchment paper, or aluminum foil
Large mixing bowl
Kitchen spoon or rubber spatula
Medium or small saucepan
Directions:
Step 1: Take out a cutting board and chop up your Milky Way bars into small pieces.
Step 2: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray, making sure that you spray the entire bottom and sides of the pan.
Alternatively, you can use parchment paper or aluminum foil if you’d prefer.
Step 3: In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, melted butter, and evaporated milk in a bowl.
Use a wooden spoon or a rubber spatula instead of an electric mixer. You want to make sure not to break up the Milky Way bites any further.
Step 4: Add your chopped candy and chocolate chips to the chocolate mixture. The dough will be thick at this point, which is how it is supposed to be.
Step 5: Pour your Milky Way mixture into the prepared pan, being sure to scrape the sides of the bowl. Try to make the brownie batter an even layer.
Step 6: Bake for 40 – 45 minutes or until a fork comes out clean from the center of the caramel brownies. You’re looking for a fudgy brownie texture, not a cake brownie.
Step 7: While your brownies are baking, make your caramel sauce. Over medium-low heat in a small or medium saucepan, mix the brown sugar, half and half, butter, and salt, stirring frequently.
Step 8: After 5 – 7 minutes of cooking, stir in your vanilla.
Cook for another minute and set it to the side until your brownies are ready.
Step 9: Once out of the oven, drizzle the caramel sauce over your homemade brownies.
You can either pour all of the rich caramel sauce over them at once or pour half on top of the pan of brownies right away and save half to pour as a caramel layer over each portion as you serve.
Allow your brownies to cool to room temperature. Cut your decadent dessert with a butter knife, pour out additional caramel if you’ve reserved any, and enjoy!
How To Store Leftover Milky Way Brownies
Store any leftover brownies in an airtight container or the baking dish covered tightly with plastic wrap for up to 3 days.
Can I Use Different Chocolate Chips In These Dessert Bars?
Yes! I would stick with either milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or semi-sweet chocolate chips so that your brownie bars resemble a Milky Way bar, but feel free to choose your favorite.
Can I Make These Salted Caramel Milky Way Brownies?
Yes! If you love salted caramel brownies, this is an easy variation to make.
After you finish making your caramel recipe, remove it from the heat and add 1 teaspoon of flaky sea salt. Drizzle your caramel mixture over the top of the brownies and voila – a salted caramel brownies recipe!
