Peanut Butter Nutella Puppy Chow

Muddy Buddies are some of my favorite treats, and these Nutella Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies are about to be some of yours! A classic snack mix that is perfect for peanut butter lovers, this will easily be a crowd favorite.

There are different names for Muddy Buddies, so whether you call this a Peanut Butter Nutella Puppy Chow recipe (which is different from dog food!) or a Muddy Buddies recipe, I can assure you this is the best puppy chow you’re going to find.

I have a long history with Muddy Buddies. My very first job ever was as a sample girl at my local chain of grocery stores.

As teenagers, my best friend and I used to drive wherever they needed us, and we would provide samples of whatever foods they were trying to sell. We learned a lot about food and we had a blast being together. It was a great first job.

One day, two huge white boxes showed up at my house. They were full of chocolate Muddy Buddies. This was the first time I have ever heard of them and I’m pretty sure they were a brand new concept – these were the classic Muddy Buddies, the original recipe.

Well, of course, we had to sample them before we helped to sell them, right? And they were incredible. Still are!

So with clean hands, food prep gloves, and little paper cups, we handed out this sweet treat. Those Muddy Buddies didn’t last the day – and we were supposed to be there for two.

We couldn’t make more because that’s not how this specific program worked, but they left a delicious little hole in my teenage heart. I have loved them ever since.

Now you can make this yummy snack at home, and incredibly easily. They are a great idea for the holiday season and as after-school snacks – plus, they will become one of your family’s favorite things to see on the table.

Recipe Notes:

  • You will need to use creamy peanut butter for this homemade puppy chow. Crunchy peanut butter likely won’t work well because of the chunks.
  • These never last long (because they’re an addicting snack!), so you may want to make a double batch.

How To Make Peanut Butter Nutella Muddy Buddy Recipe

Nutella Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies Ingredients:

1 cup peanut butter, creamy
1 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread (like Nutella)
8 cups Chocolate Chex cereal
2 cups powdered sugar

Supplies Needed:

Medium saucepan
Wooden spoon, soup spoon, or rubber spatula
Large resealable food-storage bag

Directions:

Step 1: Take out a medium or small saucepan and turn the stove to medium-low heat.

Chocolate Chex Mix cereal in a red mixing bowlStep 2: Pour both the peanut butter and the Nutella into the saucepan and stir until they have melted together. Be sure to stir frequently so that your peanut butter mixture doesn’t burn.

Note – If you think that you may have to walk away from the mixture, you may be better off using a double boiler or the microwave.

To use the microwave, place your Nutella and peanut butter into a medium microwavable bowl and heat in 15-second intervals, stirring in between until melted and combined.

Stir everything together so that your Chex cereal pieces are well coated.

Step 7: Once you’ve got a delightful powdery smooth finish on each of the sweet treats, pour the mixture into a serving bowl and enjoy!

How to Store Leftover Nutella Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies

Store any leftover Chex muddy buddies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

Do I Have To Use Chocolate Chex For This Nutella Muddy Buddies Recipe?

If you have Chocolate Chex Mix at your grocery store, I would make it your first choice, as it gives you a double-chocolate punch of flavor. If you can’t locate any, pick up some Peanut Butter Chex, Corn Chex, or Rice Chex cereal instead.

In these cases, you’ll want to add some melted chocolate to the recipe (to retain a similar flavor), so microwave chocolate chips and add about a 1/4 cup to the Nutella and peanut butter. Then pour the chocolate mixture onto the cereal and continue with this great recipe.

Can I Turn These Into Christmas Muddy Buddies?

Yes, very easily! Make the original recipe above and then add red and white chocolate candies (such as M&M’s) to turn this into Reindeer Chow. Serve it on Christmas eve with your cookies and milk or on Christmas day as a sweet snack.
