Darth Vader Cupcakes
I am not exactly sure when May The Fourth became an “official” holiday, but as my kids have grown, it has become a big one in my household. May the fourth be with you and you and you! Surrounded by all things Star Wars on this special day, these Darth Vader cupcakes will be the perfect centerpiece!
These are more complicated than most of my recipes, so give yourself some extra time. When they are done though, they are very cool!

Darth Vader Cupcakes Recipe
Ingredients:
Cupcakes and Frosting
1 box white cake mix (likely includes eggs/oil/water, so check the requirements)
2 containers of white frosting
Royal Icing
2 egg whites
1/4 tsp cream of tartar
3 cups powdered sugar
black food coloring
*NOTE – The Darth Vader heads take at least 5 hours to set. You may want to skip down and make those first before baking your cupcakes. Do what works best for you.*
Preheat your oven to the temperature on your white cake box instructions. Mix and bake according to the 24 cupcakes directions. Check your cupcakes with a toothpick to make sure they are done and allow to cool on racks for 15 to 20 minutes.
For the frosting, you can do one of two things. Take a knife and frost the cupcakes as you would regular cupcakes. To look like the photos, you’ll have to do it a bit differently.
For this method, scoop your frosting into a pastry bag with your choice of frosting tip. Frost your cupcakes with a good amount of icing (which is why you will likely need much of a second container). If you have an airbrush, brush your white frosting with silver. (If you don’t have an airbrush, skip this and leave the frosting white.) Add blue, white, green, and/or black sprinkles.

Now, let’s make the Royal Icing. Take out your stand mixer and add your powdered sugar and cream of tartar to the bowl. Mix gently to combine.
In a separate bowl, beat your two egg whites and then add them to the sugar combination. Beat the entire mixture for about 5 minutes or until you see a thick consistency.
Take 1/3 of the thickened Royal Icing and place it in a pastry bag, tying it off to seal it. This will keep the icing moist, as it can dry out quickly. Place the other 2/3 of the Royal Icing in a medium size bowl.
Add about 1 tsp of black food coloring to the bowl and mix thoroughly. If you think that you need to darken it a little more, add another drop or two and mix again. Place the black Royal Icing in a second pastry bag and tie it off.
Take a piece of waxed paper and tape it down to a countertop or cookie sheet. Using my image as an example and using a #2C/Large Star tip on the black Royal Icing bag, draw the outside of the Darth Vader head onto the waxed paper.
If you want something to trace, you can print out my image or do a Google search for another image of Darth Vader’s head and cut it out. Place this image under the waxed paper to make tracing easier. After tracing the outside, fill in the middle completely with black Royal Icing.
Now, take your smallest tip and place it on your white Royal Icing bag. Draw on the facial designs per the images in this post. You’ll want to draw lines for the helmet, the eyes, eyebrows, cheeks, and mouth.
Create 24 of these heads in total (or less/more depending on how many cupcakes you ended up with). Allow them to dry for at least 5 hours. After 5 hours (or more), test the Darth Vader heads by pushing gently on them. If there is any give, they are not dry enough.
Once Darth Vader is dry, very gently peel Darth Vader’s head off the waxed paper. Make a tiny slice in the top of the frosting of each cupcake and insert Darth Vader in the middle. Do this for each cupcake and you are done! May the fourth be with you!

Hello! Thank you for sharing these Vader cupcakes! They look fantastic! I was wondering, I didn’t see an image here of Vader I could trace? Not sure if maybe a link got broken or image didn’t appear?

I’m sorry, I don’t currently have a tracing printable, but the easiest way to do this is to print one of my photos to trace. You can also take a tracing paper and place it on a tablet or computer screen to trace that way. Good luck!
