What Is The Difference Between A Crisp, A Cobbler, And A Crumble?

While we’ve all heard of a fruit cobbler or a peach blueberry crumble, it can be a little confusing to tell the difference when all those delicious and fruity desserts are on the table. Here is the difference:

A crisp is a baked dessert full of your favorite fruits, with a streusel topping that contains sugar, flour, butter, and oats.

A crumble is very similar to a crisp in that it has a streusel topping, but a crumble topping typically doesn’t contain oats. In both a crisp and a crumble, the topping should cover all of the filling ingredients below.

A cobbler is a little bit different in that it has a biscuit-like dough topping, but it isn’t smooth like a pie crust. In a cobbler, the dough is broken into pieces and dropped in chunks over the fruit filling. The result is a bumpy and fluffier baked topping.

Recipe Notes:

  • You may need some additional oatmeal to get the texture of the fruit crisp topping right.
  • You can squeeze some lemon juice into the peach mixture, but it’s not necessary.
  • Using fresh fruit is recommended, but you can use frozen if that is easiest.
  • Pair this simple Peach Blueberry Crisp with whipped cream or a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Can I Use Frozen Peaches For The Fruit Filling?

Yes! I understand that if this is one of your favorite desserts you’d want to eat it year-round. You may not always be able to get your fresh seasonal fruit at the grocery store.

If you can get fresh berries and peaches, that would be the best first choice, but you can substitute frozen sliced peaches. Allow the frozen peaches to thaw completely or run cold water over them to expedite the thawing process.

  1. Would it be possible to make this ahead of time?
I’m thinking mix the fruit, mix the oats and then combine when ready to bake?
