These birthday cake balls also provide a fantastic opportunity to teach your kids to cook. To make these no-bake cake batter truffles, they can help to pour everything into the bowl, mix the ingredients, and form the balls with their little hands. Plus, they get rewarded with this yummy dessert at the end.
The perfect party treat for birthday parties, a baby shower, or any other special occasion, this is an easy recipe that doesn’t take much time and is great for anybody with a sweet tooth. This cake ball recipe can be made by anyone!
Recipe Notes:
- Have extra butter available – some cake mixes will require more in order to get the right texture.
- You may want to wear plastic or latex gloves so that you don’t get butter all over your hands.
- Make sure that you are packing the dough balls tightly so that they don’t fall apart.
Birthday Cake Truffles Recipe
How To Make:
Ingredients:
1 box white cake mix, any brand
1/2 cup butter melted (plus a few extra tablespoons if needed)
1/2 cup rainbow sprinkles
Directions:
Line a cookie sheet with a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper and set it aside.
Pour the vanilla cake mix into a large bowl and add 1/2 cup of melted butter. Stir to combine the ingredients thoroughly, making sure to scrape any dry mix from the sides of the bowl.
If the dough consistency is too crumbly, add in 1 additional tablespoon of melted butter (at a time) until the mixture holds and feels moldable. You want all of the cake crumbs to be sticking together. (Different cake mixes will require more butter than others.)
Pour 1/2 cup of confetti sprinkles into your cake mixture and mix well.
Using a medium cookie scoop, scoop out some cake dough. With the palms of your hands, roll the dough into balls and place balls on the lined baking sheet. The small balls should be between 2- and 1-inch balls – around the size of a ping pong ball.
As you get to the end of the cake batter, be sure to scrape around the side of the bowl with a rubber spatula to get the rest.
Place your baking tray in the fridge to set for 30 minutes. Take out the final product and serve them on a plate with a few extra sprinkles around them for decoration! They will be fine at room temperature for a while.
Store any leftover no-bake birthday cake truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Can I Use Funfetti Or Yellow Cake Mix For These Birthday Truffles?
Yes! You are better off using a sprinkles cake mix than yellow, but you can use either in a pinch. Make sure that you have plenty of rainbow sprinkles for texture with either option.
Can I Turn These Into Birthday Cake Pops?
You can try it! If you have packed the funfetti cake mix tight enough, after refrigerating, you should be able to insert a lollipop stick into the middle of a cake ball easily. If some are a little bit looser than others, serve some of the confetti cake pops with cake pop sticks in a cake pop stand or styrofoam blocks, and some just as they are.
Can I Dip These Delicious Truffles In Chocolate?
Yes! If you have packed each truffle ball well, you can easily dip them and create a chocolate shell.
You can use white chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, or candy melts to coat these delicious treats. Of all of the options, the candy melts will leave the most smooth finish.
Using a double boiler or a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave in 30-second intervals, melt the chocolate of your choice. Using a fork or a candy dipping scoop, dip each of the cake batter balls into the melted chocolate. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off so that you have a thin layer around the entire cake ball.
Place the no-bake truffles on a piece of wax paper and cover them with a bunch more colorful sprinkles. Allow them to dry and enjoy!
Can I Use Cake Scraps For This Fun Treat?
Yes! If you have leftover cake that you’d like to repurpose into no-bake truffles, you can.
Slice off any frosting and discard it. Add your pieces of baked cake to a food processor and grind it on low speed until you have fine crumbs. Add the butter (you will have to play with how much is the right amount based on how much cake mix you have), add lots of sprinkles, and create another fun treat out of the first one.

This is the perfect recipe!! I kept seeing all the recipes that added flour to the cake mix and I asked why not use just the cake mix but couldn’t get an answer so I never made them! Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. I’m making these today because I have cake mix I would love to use. I don’t use it for cakes. Those I make from scratch. I will let you know how it goes!
I’m so glad! I hope they turn out well! 🙂
We will not have to cook them?
Cake mix didn’t feel like uncooked?
Nope, no cooking needed. These truffles have their own texture due to the ingredients used. Enjoy! 🙂
Can you use any flavor of cake mix?
Strawberry/pink sprinkles?
Lemon/yellow sprinkles???
Yes, any flavor will work for this 🙂
They sound great but I was wondering if they would be too rich if you dipped them in melted chocolate
I think it would work if you dipped them in dark chocolate. Milk chocolate might be a little too rich.
I made these for Christmas. dipped them in white chocolate. I usually don’t like cake or white chocolate so it took me until they were almost all gone to try one…I ate the rest. soooo good!
I’m so glad you enjoyed them! I love the idea of dipping them in chocolate!
PLEASE HEAT TREAT THE CAKE MIX! this recipe is SUPER dangerous as it can cause food poisoning!
Cake mix is raw flour- which were not supposed to eat. I wouldn’t recommend doing this without treating the flour first! Baking the flour is one way to treat the flour so it can kill off any bateria from the raw dough.
Thanks for the recipe idea but please for safety of yourself and others add a note about heat treating the flour- as a baking blog I would hope you’d know this info 🙏🏽🙏🏽
